so my wife is super picky and wont eat the chicken breast from costco or sams club anymore so im looking for some other options. anyone have a good spot to buy in bulk that actually tastes good? i need to find somewhere else to stock up because she just doesnt like the quality of the ones weve been getting- let me know if there are any online spots or different stores i should check out instead. thanks!
honestly i totally get where shes coming from. the costco ones have been getting that "woody" texture lately and its gross. i started going to aldi for their organic stuff and it actually tastes like chicken. way better quality and still pretty cheap.
if you have a sprouts or a whole foods nearby they usually have sales on the air-chilled breasts. its a total game changer compared to the frozen bags from sam's club. once you go air-chilled you can really tell the difference in the flavor.
my wife is the exact same way lol. i started ordering from butcher box and the quality is night and day. it’s more expensive for sure but if she actually eats it then it’s worth the extra cash. plus it shows up right at the door which is nice.
maybe try a local butcher? sometimes the bulk prices there arent as bad as you'd think if you buy like 10-20 lbs at once. the quality is usually way higher than the big box stores where the chicken is pumped full of salt water anyway.
have you checked out wild pastures? similar to butcher box but i think the taste is even better. costco chicken has just been weirdly tough lately- i think a lot of people are jumping ship to other spots for their proteins.
weirdly enough i’ve had good luck with the frozen tenderloins instead of the full breasts. they seem to stay more tender and dont have those weird gristle parts that turn people off. might be worth a shot before you switch stores entirely!
if you want to stick to bulk check out azure standard. you have to pick it up from a "drop" location but the quality is insane. its all farm fresh stuff and way better than the mass produced stuff at sams.
i feel your pain man. my wife refused to eat costco chicken after one bad pack. we started getting the "heritage" chicken from crowd cow and its awesome. definitely tastes like real food and not some science experiment.
honestly just go to a regular grocery store and look for the brands that say "no salt added" or "no saline." the big warehouse ones soak them in brine to make them heavier and it ruins the texture. makes them super rubbery when you cook them.
honestly check out butcher box if you dont mind the subscription thing. the quality is night and day compared to the big warehouse stores. my girlfriend was the same way and now she won't go back. sams club chicken has been hitting different lately (and not in a good way) so i dont blame her one bit.
man i totally get her frustration. the costco ones have been super "woody" lately - like you bite into it and it’s just tough and weird. i switched to wild pastures online and it’s way better, or even just the "air chilled" stuff from whole foods if you can catch a sale. its definitely more expensive but at least it actually tastes like chicken lol.
if you have a sprout's nearby i'd try their bulk bins or the butcher counter. it’s usually air-chilled which makes a huge difference in the texture. warehouse chicken is always pumped full of salt water which makes it slimy when u cook it. its a bit more of a drive for me but way worth it to avoid the "picky wife" complaints haha.
have you tried a local restaurant supply store? somewhere like gfs or a local butcher that sells "case prices." sometimes the quality is better because they’re supplying actual chefs instead of just the general public. otherwise maybe try thighs for a bit? way harder to mess up and they stay juicy.
lol i went through this exact same thing. we had to stop the costco chicken runs because it was just grossing us out. now i actually go to aldi and get the organic stuff in the green packs. its still relatively cheap but the flavor is way more consistent. definitely worth a shot before you start spending crazy money on the fancy online sites!
