Hey guys,
I wanted to get a bit of a consensus here on the current thinking regarding donating blood to keep hematocrit in check. Every time this comes up, it feels like there’s still a huge mix of opinions. On one hand, you’ve got guys who donate religiously every 56 days and swear it's the only way to go.
Then on the flip side, I've been seeing more lately that frequent donations can just lead to a nasty iron deficiency and might even cause a worse rebound of your RBC and HCT anyway. I’d love to hear from some of the more seasoned guys on here—what’s your take? Is phlebotomy actually necessary, and if so, when? Looking forward to seeing what you guys think.
honestly man the "donating every 56 days" thing is kind of old school advice. i did that for a year and my ferritin absolutely tanked- felt like death even though my hct looked "perfect" on paper. now i only go if i actually feel symptoms like headaches or high bp
it’s such a catch-22 lol. you thin the blood out but then your body overcompensates and kicks rbc production into overdrive anyway. hydration and keeping an eye on your iron is way more important than just bleeding out every couple months
i’m a "seasoned" guy and i stopped donating years ago. just drink way more water than you think you need and keep your cardio up. if your hct is creeping past 54 then maybe consider a one-off but don't make it a personality trait haha
watch your ferritin levels bro. if you donate too much you’ll end up with no iron and youll be wonderin why you're exhausted all the time even on a blast. its a delicate balance for sure
my doc actually says therapeutic phlebotomy is overrated unless you have a legit medical condition. most guys just need to lower their dose a bit or donate like twice a year max. the rebound effect is definitely real
the iron deficiency is the part no one talks about. i'd rather have slightly thick blood than zero energy because i gave it all away to the red cross lol. just get bloodwork done and see where your actual levels are before you go in
man, it’s such a rabbit hole. I used to go every 2 months like clockwork but my ferritin absolutely crashed. Felt like death for weeks. Now I only go if my RBC actually starts creeping into the danger zone, otherwise it’s just not worth the iron issues - definitely check your labs before you just go donating.
Been there man. My doc actually told me to stop donating so much because the rebound is real. Your body just panics and tries to make more cells anyway. I found that just drinking a ton more water and staying on top of cardio helped me way more than giving blood ever did.
There's definitely two schools of thought on this but honestly the "donate every 56 days" crowd is getting smaller. If you do go, make sure you're keeping an eye on your iron levels. Iron deficiency without anemia is a total nightmare to fix once you're in that hole.
I still go occasionally but nowhere near as often as I used to. It’s a fine line to walk for sure. Just make sure you aren't just doing it because you saw some guy on a forum say you have to - everyone’s blood chemistry is different so what works for him might tank your energy levels.
lol the "religious" donors are usually the ones wondering why they're exhausted all the time. phlebotomy is a tool but it shouldn't be a hobby. I'd say wait until you actually feel the high HCT symptoms or the bloodwork says it's a must. stay hydrated in the meantime!
